BUGS

Crunch. Eww, gross. Dad just stepped on a big bug. I don’t like
bugs except for butterflies. Some kids love bugs. They collect
them and put them in jars. We don’t usually have bugs in the
house, but because of all the rain we have been seeing these
really big bugs. Not many, but enough to scare me, nanny and
mom. The bug company is coming the end of the week to spray
the house. Dad’s going out of town for work for a couple of
days and leaving us in charge of these yucky bugs. Oh no!
there’s another one. Mom runs to the sofa and puts her feet
up. She’s afraid. Nanny and I try to catch it but it’s too fast and
runs under the kitchen sink. I told mom we need a plan. So, this
is how it’s going to go. Puppy will bark when she sees a bug and
nanny and I will run and get the broom and dustpan. Nanny will
sweep it into my dustpan and then I’ll carefully throw it into a
garbage bag, tie it up in two bags so it won’t get loose and save
it for the bug man. Uh oh! There goes Puppy. She’s barking.
Nanny’s running to get the broom. Come on nanny, run faster.
She’s almost got it, but oh no! The bug got away again. I think
we need a different plan. Let me think about it. I’ve got it. I
wonder what these bugs like to eat. Mom looks up their diet.
They like sweets. Hmmm. I’ve got an idea. We’ll crumble up
some cookies and put them in the middle of the room on a
paper plate and then the bug will eat and eat until it’s totally
stuffed and then we’ll sneak up on it and catch it. Okay here

goes. The cookies are on the plate. It’s been an hour and we
haven’t seen a bug. Look, there it is. Oh My Gosh! There’s one
two three of them. They’re eating all the cookies and now it
looks like they’re resting. I didn’t know bugs rested. That’s so
funny. I wonder if they’re so full that they have to take a nap.
Now’s my chance. I’m going to use my sand bucket to catch
them. I have to be really quiet and sneak up on them and
throw my bucket over them and GOTCHA. Yay, I got them, I got
them. I help nanny pick up the paper plate and bucket and
mom opens the plastic garbage bag and we carefully throw
them in there and tie it really tight and save them for the bug
guy. The bug guy came the next day and took the bugs away
and sprayed the house. Dad came back later that afternoon and
asked how his girls were doing and said we didn’t have to worry
about creepy crawly bugs anymore because he was back home
to protect us from those scary bugs. We just smiled.
